First meeting of the WarDrivers Of Wichita
2004-08-05
It begin on a dark cloudy thursday night in the heart of Wichita, Kansas. At a local coffee house just north of downtown members of the newly formed WarDrivers Of Wichita (WDoW) were enjoying various proto-typical coffee house beverages. Sitting around the sidewalk cafe table (so as to keep an eye on nearby cars loaded with wardriving paraphernalia) sat four steely eyed wi-fi enthusiasts - technoanarchist(me) of Cyberpunk System/teknophobia.net infamy. To his left - DeathMetalHal(DmH), to the right was HardcoreDisciple(HdD) and directly across was the man simply known as *J*. I drank my C8H10N4O2 laced beverage the effects were immediate. Conversation was fast like machinegunfire and with my brain buzzing; the suggestion of a nearby meeting place was agreed on.
Winding our way through the twisty roads of riverside, the caravan reached downtown. Alas! (I wailed) The parking facility that was our destination had automatic toll gates! (hmmmph that was something new.) HdD thinking quickly drove on ahead; leading the way to a nearby government parking lot. Perfect for our subverzive radiowave snooping activities. Precisely at 22:00:00 hours our gear was readied! laptops, a lunchbox(type of computer case style for you n00bs) and all kinds of antennas omnidirectional, parabolic, dual antenna for OS'es Knoppix STD, Windowz along with (respectively Kismet and Netstumbler. Quite an impressive display of AlphaGeek hardware/software (even if I say so myself!). At exactly 22:15:00 the contest began.
By contest I mean the nights goal (in 45 minutes) was to see who could get the most access points logged on their wifi snooping gear. HdD shouted "Clear your log files!" I could barely hear his words as his tires were leaving black marks on the pavement for about 3 meters (near as I could reckon anywayz). This left myself and DmH choking on the exhaust fumes. Not to be outdone the 1.6 liter turbo charged engine of my 1990 Honda civic came to life with a turn of the key. I laid rubber for about 0.2 meters with a smirk on my face I laughed... wait till HdD sees that... I laughed again.
The area assigned to Team Red (*J*, HdD and his female companion) lay north of Douglas Street. Team Blue (Myself and DmH) had south of Douglas (this roughly splits the city in half). As for the Blue Team's next 45 minutes what they did will have to be told by them. As for Dmh and I we headed south, zig-zagging through town. Our first destination was HdD's crib. (this being the unfortunate location of my garmin etrex data cable (*grrrr*)). Barely even stopping at red lights and pushing yellow lights to pink. DmH scanning 2.4Ghz furiously at 11Mb. Undaunted by our opponents superior gear and conniving, cunning plans. Team Blue was determined to win! Gathering electromagnetic spectrum with a Lucent 4db omni-directional antenna; wireless connections filled the screen with page after page of connections. Before long the time was at hand to head back north. More details later... enough for tonight.
